Memorial Day Weekend

May 23 - 26th, 2008

Hello Riders,

Sharon, Jim and I are at it again getting ready for the 44th Rally. We survived the last one and I can say we really had a great time preparing for last year's ride and watching you all enjoy yourselves. If you came, THANK YOU! Please come back again! We are planning some new events this year and are working to make this the most fun Rally ever!

No More Car Show

After 20 years, the car show has decided to move to Santa Maria.

Bad News: You won't be able to see the cars.

Good News: There will be more hotel space and less traffic.

NEWS FLASH! The city of Paso Robles is offering to support the Rally by providing ..... (well we can't tell you quite yet). We are excited about involving the city and working with them to make this the best Rally to date.

Great Western Supported Century and Metric Century- It's a Beauty!

Sharon, Jim and I (along with Alan ) picked out a new route and drove the entire thing in October. It's a beauty! We planned to do a bit of riding ourselves, but only got onr short breakfast ride to Templeton due to bad weather. It poured! So we reluctantly stayed inside our hotel room and ate and drank our way into oblivion while watching football (not really). We do enjoy a good bottle of wine occasionally, but we will have to teach Jim how to open one properly. (See photo on right).

GWBR Blog

If you have never visited a Blog, now is your chance. We will keep adding stories and photos as we make our way through the year. Our Blog has information about our journey to Interbike in Las Vegas. Interbike is the largest bicycle trade show in the world. Check is out!

Rider Spotlight: The Infamous Dan Henry

Wine Connoisseur Jim Ware

We met Dan Henry at the Solvang Prelude and was it an honor to meet someone who attended the first three Rallys. Born in 1913 and from Santa Ynez Valley Dan is the unofficial president of the Bicycle Touring Club of Solvang. Dan is a veteran cyclist whose organized bicycle touring exploits go back some fifty years. During that time he has (among numerous other accomplishments) designed full suspension bicycles decades before they became popular on mountain bikes; invented the typical route marking (commonly known as Dan Henry Arrows) seen on countless century rides; convinced Clement to produce their first butyl tubed tubular (sew-up) tires; participated in countless tours around the world; and organized events for the New York Cycle Club, the International Bicycle Touring Society and many, many others.

Reserve Your Hotel Early

Even though the car show won't be in town, reserve early. The city will be coordinating with us to reserve some blocks of rooms. More information will be provided in future newsletters. In addition, we will be updating the hotel list on our web site.

We need volunteers!
It's fun to do and a great way to meet other people.
