New Faces at the Rally |
| |
|
The Great Western Bicycle Rally has always been an event that welcomes new people. This Memorial Day weekend, we will see a couple of new faces on the Rally Team. Chris and Angie Merrill are the new Rally Directors. No strangers to hosting cycling events or the Great Western Bicycle Rally, Angie and her family participated in the rally for 15 years. They look forward to working with the Rally Team to bring participants another great Rally. Laurel King and Sharon & Jim Ware will be working closely with Angie and Chris and will still be a big part of the event for many years to come. Chris and Angie look forward to meeting you next May in Paso Robles. |

Ralph Boethling |
| |
If you have been to the Rally, you most certainly know Ralph & Laverne Boethling. Sadly, this past December 4th, Ralph passed away suddenly at the age of 84. Ralph and Laverne directed the Rally for 17 years (1977-1994) and have always been a big part of the event. At the annual "stand-up, sit-down", Ralph was always the last one standing. Ralph was a proud member of the LA Wheelmen Cycling Club and has completed enough epic rides to fill anyone's Bucket List. Ralph was fascinated by the number 5 and was famous for picking out the hilliest routes to ride. This May, we honor Ralph with the 5 point star logo on Rally merchandise and the most climbing for any Rally Century to date. Ralph will always be a part of the Rally. His spirit lives on in each of us who belong to the Great Western Bicycle Rally family.

New Rally Merchandise |
|
We have worked closely with the good people at Pactimo to bring you a fantastic new design for the 2012 jersey. The 5 pointed star represents the 5 decades the Rally has covered and honors Ralph Boethlings love of the number 5. The star theme carries over to the other Rally merchandise as well. You can purchase items while registering or at the Rally as long as we haven't sold out! |

Featured Rally Rides
Paso
Robles, in our opinion, is one of the best places to ride simply because of the
variety of rides in one area. Consequently we are able to choose 25 rides each
year out of about 75 rides developed over the years. Here is a great new one you
may want to try and more info on the centuries! |

"Salsa" Group Ride--- 42 miles
Saturday morning will see the introduction of a new ride...the "Salsa" Group Ride. Want to ride fast, take it easy, or a bit of both? You have the option of riding "Mild", "Medium", or "Hot" with your friends, family, and other riders. Each group will have a leader that will help keep the group together and offer riding tips & assistance. If you are new to group riding, or want to give it a try, this is the ride for you. Rumor has it that we may have some special guests to help lead this ride. |
 |
Great Western 100 Century & Metric Century
Will this be the year you conquer the Century ride at the Rally? We are putting together what is sure to be a challenging, and fun ride for everyone. To make the ride a bit easier and more enjoyable, we are encouraging all riders to join us for a mass start for both rides. Having others to share the adventure with is always the best way to go. More details to follow in the months ahead. Sign up now and commit to achieving your goal. |

Tri-Tip BBQ Santa Maria Style - Sunday Night
Santa Maria
Style Barbecue is a regional culinary tradition rooted in the Santa Maria
Valley in Santa Barbara County on the Central Coast of California. This method
of barbecuing dates back to the mid-19th century and is today regarded as a
mainstay of Californias culinary heritage. The traditional
Santa Maria Style Barbecue menu was copyrighted by the Santa Maria Valley
Chamber of Commerce in 1978. Santa Maria Style Barbecue requires a specific
preparation. The favored cuts of meat are top block sirloin and tri-tip. Before
cooking, the meat is seasoned with a special blend of salt, black pepper and
garlic salt. The meat is then grilled over coals of red oak, a wood that is
native to the region, giving the meat a hearty, smoky flavor. The classic Santa
Maria Style Barbecue menu, which was copyrighted by the Santa Maria Valley
Chamber of Commerce in 1978, also includes fresh salsa, grilled French bread
dipped in sweet melted butter, tossed green salad and slow-cooked pinquito
beans.
The
Atascadero Lions Club is comin' to cook! Price is $10 and the menu includes
beans, salad, bread, desert and of course Tri-tip! All proceeds go to the Lions
Club and their Mobile Eyesite Trailer program |
We need volunteers! It's fun to do and a
great way to meet other people.
