Dave was a long time Rally participant, attending every single Rally (except 1972) since the GWBR began back in 1965. An avid cyclist both for leisure and competitive, Dave held many records in Southern California for 200 mile bicycle rides and raced in the California State Road Races and National Road Races in New York and Colorado. He completed the Los Angeles Wheelmen 400 mile century Highland route and was invited but unable to attend selection races for the Olympic Road races in the 1970’s.
Dave still holds the record time for a single rider at the GWBR time trial and he holds the record for the fastest tandem rider with his brother in law Craig.
Dave passed away in 2000 following complications from a heart transplant after he contracted a virus that attacked his heart. However, Dave lives on in the hearts and minds of Rally participants through the Dave Smith Memorial Time Trial.
Overall winners of the Time Trial (male and female) are awarded these fantastic rose bowl awards. Your name will be engraved on the trophy that is passed on from one winner to the next. You too may become a piece of Rally history next to Dave's name.
