Great Western Bicycle Rally Visits LA Bike Tour and Solvang Century

Laurel, Sharon and Jim took to the road again and met some new potential rider participants for the Great Western Bicycle Rally. Sharon and her sister Linda worked the registration for the LA Bike tour (accompanies the LA Marathon) and Laurel drove down to meet them at the Grand Wilshire, near the start of the marathon.online casino

At 3AM, we all got up and I drove to USC where the LA Bike Tour was to finish. Riders start just a dawn and finish the ride between 8am - 9:30 am. I set up the booth in the dark, ate a donut and breakfast burrito and downed some coffee to get ready for the onslaught of riders. I met all kinds of people…. mothers waiting for their daughters, families, people raising money for a paralyzed friend and LA citizens searching through garbage cans for recyclables. All riders were out to enjoy the beautiful weather, to receive their finish medal and to take advantage of riding in LA with no traffic.

I took a picture of a rider who gave a ride to his Pug “Misha” in his bike basket. He rode the entire way (26 miles) with Misha enjoying the scenery.

The next weekend, we attended the Solvang Century. The night before we set up our booth and talked to a few folks. The next day riders started straggling in at 11 am and a steady flow of riders continued until 5pm. It was a beautiful day and there were many “first time” century riders. I don’t know why, but I guess I had an eye for dogs on this trip. Here is another participant carrying his dog at the event.

The town of Solvang has been the host of this century for 27 years. Many of the stores and residences welcome the riders. We found this sign in a front yard of a home. Also pictured is the vendor fair, before it became packed with riders.
